The Daily Beast's Sam Stein offers some polling (Ipsos: B+) results that would have justified the founders' fear of the democratic mob, while making the old anti-Federalists proud of their Bill of Rights demands.
Among Republicans, 48 percent said they believed "the news media is the enemy of the American people." But it gets worse — far worse — than that.
43 percent of self-identified Republicans said that they believed "the president should have the authority to close news outlets engaged in bad behavior"…. When asked if Trump should close down specific outlets, including CNN, The Washington Post, and The New York Times, nearly a quarter of Republicans (23 percent) agreed.
The insanity has spread to a lesser but still statistically significant degree to other camps as well.
12 percent of Democrats and 26 percent of Independents agreed that "the news media is the enemy of the American people"...12 percent of Democrats and 21 percent of Independents agreed that "the president should have the authority to close news outlets engaged in bad behavior."
The upside is that larger segments disagreed. Still, that nearly half of one of our major political parties would agree that this president should possess the power to close down media "engaged in bad behavior" — whatever that means — is a frightening sign that contemporary partisanship has eclipsed even the U.S. Constitution.
