The Times' Timothy Egan presents a fascinating look at Idaho's improbable Democrat, Congressman Walt Minnick, and what's keeping him politically alive in one of the nation's reddest districts. Egan concludes with something of an epiphany.
This living oxymoron — an elected Idaho Democrat — is banking on what seems like an absurdly quaint notion in the Obama midterms. “Most people in this country are pragmatic and moderate,” Minnick said. “If you don’t govern from the middle you probably will lose your majority.”
It’s true in 2010, and will be true in 2012, after the Republicans are thrown out for overreaching and Minnick, for all his characteristics that make Democrats wince, will look like he was on to something.

I put more value in a Russ Feingold, who is going to go down while standing up for what's right. In the long run, that's worth more than one seat in Congress.
And so it goes, likely forever.
