Congressional Quarterly reports that the GOP House leadership now insists "that the entire Constitution be read on the House floor on Jan. 6."
In their heroic voyage of originalist symbolism, let's hope they don't get snagged up on that divine Judeo-Christian plan of three-fifths-of-a-person.
Oh but that, they say, was a secular compromise. Well, then, what else in God's Constitution, as GOP "originalists" see it, was muddied by man's temporal inhumanity to man? And once the text's divine infallibility is denied, doesn't that open other passages -- such as "general welfare" -- to non-fundamentalist, un-tea-partyish interpretations?
You'd better watch it, boys. You just might open a debate that you'll regret.
