I noticed historian William Cronon has a NY Times op-ed running today ("Wisconsin's Radical Break"), which is imbued with his customary excellence. You should read it, but if you've not also read his 1991 Nature's Metropolis: Chicago and the Great West, I recommend you do, for Cronon makes what many would find forbidding -- environmental history -- an absolutely fascinating read.
