« Obama did WHAT? | Main | Paul Ryan: technocratic whiz kid »

October 26, 2011

Robert Lipscomb

My comments and those of others on this site have struggled articulate what it means to be liberal, progressive, conservative right, left, Democrat, Republican and so on. While there are (important) side shows regarding social values or international diplomacy, they typically are tools of the GOP for fighting for the real issue - money.

Always follow the money.

I doubt that the typical GOP leader is any more worried about gay marriage or Islamofacism than I am.

As my father says, "It's not about the money. It's about how much money."

The USA is comprised of two distinct groups whose world views are ferverently held and mutually exclusive. The fever is as intense as that of 150 years ago between states rights/slavery and union/abolition.

One group believes that the only effective and morally just means of prosperity is ensuring that the wealthiest maximize the amount of money that they pocket so they can invest it and create jobs through trickling down like a summer rain on a plant.

The other group believes that while that is important it is insufficient in and of itself. (At the risk of stretching a metaphor) the roots of the plant must be fed and the plant and soil tended.

More simply, it is a top down approach versus a bottom up approach.

The 2012 elections will likely decide which vision wins out.
