At the risk of repeating myself I must observe that people who call horse races for a living almost always call races tight. Even when a calendar provides sufficient discrimination to measure the difference between first and second place.

McCain was running uncontested; Romney is not. That may account for the difference in enthusiasm. I have a feeling that the GOP will coalesce around Romney as their anti-Obama after he becomes the nominee.

This likely outcome, and the GOP's ongoing efforts at voter suppression, will make 2012 a close election. Furthermore, important swing states like OH, FL, PA, and WI are controlled by the GOP, making voter fraud even more of a probability.
