National Journal has put up some memorable presidential campaign posters. I like the bluntness of this one (from another — and nearly forgotten — political dynasty, the Harrisons):
Second among my favorites is this. "Civilization" is a nice touch.
Notice that Gov. McKinley is atop gold, which, along with tariffs, was the issue of the day. The gold coin represented opposition to the silverite ravings of William Jennings Bryan, about whom Mencken observed: "If the fellow was sincere, then so was P.T. Barnum." Also notice who's hefting the coin: the industrial working class, the monied class, and middle-class shopkeepers. Quite a coalition. At any rate, the one in the middle flooded McKinley's campaign with cash — which is why, to this day, McKinley's political operation is Karl Rove's favorite.
