Pope Francis has been good PR for The Church, but make no mistake, it remains an extremely conservative organization. In the news this morning are stories that the Vatican protested the White House guest list because it included an activist nun, among others they consider undesirables. Concerning pollution, Reuters has an interesting exclusive about how "several dioceses and other Catholic institutions are leasing out drilling rights to oil and gas companies to bolster their finances":

Of course President Obama has approved Shell drilling for oil in the Arctic and also visited the Arctic to highlight environmental damage. The Church has a point about this being an imperfect world, even if they do go a bit overboard about it.
