I like to ask people who talk about the power of Superpacs a question and it is this: The Government of the United States has the most powerful navy the world has ever seen so why can't it win in Afghanistan?

Donald Trump hasn't spent squat compared to the other candidates and he doesn't have a Superpac. And he's kicking their collective asses. Now if you ask the people who are, once again, demanding the release of the Money Kracken perhaps we could ask them what Superpac money is supposed to do about Trump that regular campaign dollars cannot? Is it like magic money? Are you going to use it to run another campaign to say Trump is just another politician. Like Jeb. Or Marco. or Ted...

Poor Jeb. He doesn't have his father's intellect and gift for impulse control, or his brother's charisma (such as it is). He has looked uncomfortable from day 1, and snappish with reporters that ask him questions he should have spent many months preparing for if he knew he was going to run for president. I don't know what is more appalling to him. Having to run for a job he doesn't appear to want, or discovering that the job is not being just handed to him.

Anne J

I actually think that thanks to Donald Trump and Ben Carson there is a new way to campaign without having to actually campaign. Just put yourself out there, say some ridiculous things to call attention to yourself, complain to the rubes on your web site about how the "P.C. Police" are bullying you, and just watch the small dollar donations roll in. I have always maintained that a few dollars from millions of people means a lot more than millions of dollars from a few people.

The real point is that in the minds of our "highest" jurists money equals speech. I find it unfair that I can't walk into a bank and have a teller hand me piles of Constitutionally protected free money.

Bob

What happened to the usual Republican machismo? Not only is Jeb sounding whiny, Trump is crying how unfair it is that Dr. Woo is beating him in Iowa polls.

Anne J

I'm sure they think they're being tough. But people like them who have had everything handed to them their whole lives have a tough time when they perceive any threats to their sense of entitlement.

Bob

I think you're spot on. That's one place not being a "professional politician" doesn't work for Trump. I'd think Jeb would know better. He's not even as smart as Dubya.

The problem I have with the stupendous amounts of money spent on American elections is not so much what they do with it. There's plenty of evidence for all to see that it really doesn't have much effect when you try to use it to sell an unsalable candidate. To my mind the big problem is that really minor issues that are nevertheless useful for fundraising, like abortion, put the more important stuff on the back burner.

Bob

It also bothers me the super PACs can act like giant slush funds for projects besides elections. They're a blight on democracy.
