In the litany of items that Bernie "wants" as peace concessions you will find his great indignation at the closed-primary system, which is horribly undemocratic in his opinion, so Bernie wants closed primaries gone. Writes Politico: "Making the case that Democrats need independents on their side to win general elections, Sanders has repeatedly suggested that more primaries should use an open format," which so far has favored Sanders.
You will not find the word "caucus" anywhere in the list of Bernie's complaints. Yet if you were looking for a word to describe the least democratically friendly procedure within the nominating process, "caucus" would be that word. With its intolerable demands on especially the Democratic poor — one doesn't just dart in and out of a caucus meeting, which can take hours; likely unaffordable time off work — eliminating caucuses should sit not merely among, but atop, the list of Bernie's "wants."
So why is it missing from the list? Because, of course, profoundly undemocratic caucuses happened to benefit Sen. Sanders — which makes his fresh and bold political honesty just old and very bold hypocrisy. Hell even I dislike the caucus system as undemocratic, and more "democracy" is scarcely among my leading wants.
Sometimes I wonder how the old coot keeps a straight face as he lectures his temporarily adopted party on what's good and what's bad, what's needed and what should be dismissed. I know I couldn't pull it off.
