Duff?

pm

Nailed it right off.
http://duffandnonsense.typepad.com/duff_nonsense/2018/06/ring-out-the-bells.html

Tom

Is misspelling Justice Ginsburg's name one of those right-wing "things" like calling it the "Democrat Party"? This stuff makes me irrationally angry.

Anne J

Not surprised.

Tony

Whew. I thought it might have been Trump himself.

Give him a week or two.

Max

As vile and hateful as always. Why even bother to look, I suppose .. .

Max

That's why they do it, part of their unity of hate.

Peter G

He calls this sort of thing humor. Who will rid Duff of Conservative politicians with whom he disagrees he asked the other day. And then went on to describe the use of the guillotine on them. But he did, as I pointed out, offer the weasel that they were perfectly entitled to offer the opinions for which he hoped someone would assasinate them. Not the first time either. He went after the woman who was elected to replace Jo Cox, who was assasinated, with language indistinguishable from the assassin. So outraged was he when I pointed that out that I was banned. There was not the slightest hint of humor in that written assault. Just pure malice. Which naturally his ilk resent as an attempt to impose political correctness every time one of these tin pot Bohemian Corporals gets called out for hoping some nut will do what they lack the courage to do themselves.

So when he drops by to misrepresent himself with phony bonhomie as a moderate and considerate gentleman I feel compelled to call bullshit. And if you have any doubt about who his own audience is then pick a juicy rant and check the commentary. Those guys sound like the freaking Taliban when they opine about women dressing immodestly and earning rape or assault or simply forcing them to ogle these women. Frankly they sound a lot of the time like incels.

Anne J

I had to look up what "bohemian corporal" means and boy is it ever fitting! He'll probably try to join the right wing chorus of blaming Maxine Waters for the shooting at the newspaper office today. Of course we don't know any details yet, but since when has that stopped them?

Max

You'll love this: tonight Sean Hannity did exactly that - blame Maxine Waters for the newspaper shooting. (BTW, I believe Nancy Pelosi blundered in her rebuke of Waters.)
There is no bottom, as we are discovering.

Anne J

Yes I saw that earlier. Then I saw it again on a HuffPost comment thread. Looks like the troll probably got his marching orders directly from Sean

Peter G

You’d think it would eventually dawn on Duff that regularly indulging in fantasies about killing people or having them killed whether it be politicians on both the left and the right ( Duff definition of moderate) or masturbatory fantasies about dead unarmed black teenagers would probably leave an impression on others who read his dreck. Trying to pass them off as humor? Every time? That wouldn’t fool a first year psych major. The man his issues.

Max

That they sound like incels is almost certainly not coincidental. Aren't they? That murder fantasies can lead to murder is not lost on the troll. Tp have anything "dawn" on him would require a level of decency not present in the troll.

Mark

HAN Solo.

Please leave the illiteracy to the right.

David & Son of Duff

That's the problem with so many of you 'Yankee-doodles', particularly the ideologically fixated ones, you just don't 'do' irony!

Mind you, y'all provide an endless stream of unconscious irony which in turn provides me with some giggles starting with our host's title above: "The hate positively oozes from the right". DO ANY OF YOU EVER READ YOURSELVES? The endless stream of bilious, rancid and frequently foul-mouthed *hatred* that flows through this blog directed at anyone, to Right OR Left, who fails to support the tenets of national social, er, 'democracy' is beyond irony or even satire. And this is supposed to be a moderate, middle of the road, political blog?

No wonder your national 'sport' appears to be charging into crowded restaurants and shooting people!

The Dark Avenger

I would suggest nobody respond to the WPOLS.

Bitter Old Woman

Duff, I've read you for ages. I grew up in England, I lived in Cambridge for ten years. I'm sick to death of academics who're not as clever as my husband. Not even close.

The thing is, I know that you're not as bad as you've told these guys you are, but even before PM outed you for this particular post, I knew it was a bad look. It jarred with me.

I found this blog through Duff, I rarely agree with him. Still, he's generally funny and light hearted with a hint of seriousness, and he has a clever son who knows better, and they're respectful of each other.

Duff, I knew that you were joking. Same language, completely different interpretations. Just maybe don't suggest that somebody should be pushed down a flight of steps because they think you mean it!

The Dark Avenger

He’s old enough to know better.

Bitter Old Woman

Shouldn't you be asleep?

The Dark Avenger

Who appointed you my keeper?

Max

Roger that.

Max

"When people show you who they are, believe them the first time." - Maya Angelou

David & Son of Duff

In my defence, m'lady, I didn't actually suggest that Justice Ginsburg, an exceedingly elderly lady, be "pushed" down the marble steps of the Courthouse, merely that she take a bit of a tumble which might persuade her at long last to reign in her colossal ego and offer her long-overdue resignation.

Incidentally, I am sympathetic to your aversion to those academics who frequently confuse educational knowledge with good judgment but, hey, I'm a man who failed most of his 'O'-level exams!

W O Blankenship

The Orange Oaf and his criminal cohort are separating babies from their parents and putting said babies in concentration camps. Sarah Sanders gets politely asked to vacate a restaurant and the outcry from the right and most of the media is way over the top.

Civility my @$$.

Max

Yup - *now* they want "civility."

Anne J

I wouldn't call the worthless limey piece of shit a man.

Anne J

I definitely think worthless limey piece of shit is an incel. When it's not getting its rocks off fantasizing about dead black teenagers, it attacks women. And then has the nerve to call it "irony".

Peter G

Not only do I read the material here Duff but extensively elsewhere. Including for purposes of type study your own blog. Anyone at all can go and read your frequent fantasies about the death and destruction of your perceived enemies whether they be either the wrong color or the wrong sex. Trying to pass these fantasies off as jokes isn’t really fooling anyone except maybe you. But the other common thread to your little digressions from sanity is the vague wish that seems to accompany them that an unnamed someone do something about those problem people. Just not you.

You’re not a racist you say. But you like to quote phony black crime statistics that come from racists every time some unfortunate unarmed black person gets shot. The whataboutism is really all you have to cling to. Consider what you have just written here. It is pure unalloyed Trumper grade intellectualism. We are passionate as you claim to be yet no one here ever seems to advocate violence as the solution. You do regularly. But we are the problem? You sound like Trump explaining why Obama made him abuse children. No one but you makes you do that. You can snowflake all you want about how unfair it is for your racism and sexism is constrained by political correctness. It isn’t. Have at it. What you are really whining about is that it isn’t accepted by decent people.

David & Son of Duff

Ah yes, separating babies from their mothers! Would that be the same thing as what they practice at Planned (non)Parenthood where the use scalpels to hack them out from the womb and then carve them up in order to sell the spare parts?

Max

Just days ago you write Peter is always right. Which is it? And is our host in the wrong here?

The Dark Avenger

Merry Mary sees her task here as comforting the comfortable, and afflicting the afflicted.

JTL

Is the procedure (which you mischaracterize horribly, of course) forced on the mothers by Planned Parenthood? You already know the answer to your question is "no," but you obviously don't care. It's just a smokescreen of bullshit and whataboutism.

Anne J

I love how these cowardly, dishonest incels like the worthless limey piece of shit whine about "political correctness" stifling their free speech when no such thing is happening. They're just butthurt if anyone answers them back. They expect us to just sit, down, shut up and take the abuse, but if anyone answers them back they whine like the victim mentality drama queens that they are. By the way I love how you used the word "snowflake" as a verb. It was quite fitting.

Anne J

I love how these assholes play the abortion card anytime somebody brings up the forced removal of children from their mothers at the border. They're the same creatures that have nothing but contempt for the already born babies and the mothers who carry them.

W O Blankenship

Like most of his winger imbeciles, Duffy Wuffy attempts to change the subject.

Peter G

I am sympathetic to autodidacts and have known many. But you are not one of those. On the contrary your evident contempt for the educated, whether they be female Shakespearean scholars, military officers or scientists betrays a profound anti-intellectualism. When you begin your opinion piece on climate science with the frank admission that you lack the knowledge to make a judgement but conclude that it all just a giant conspiracy that is what I call trailer parkism. And it is laden with all the visceral resentment that goes with that. But you'll notice I never said that you were stupid. You could have cured your own ignorance as many people do without formal education. You chose not to do that.

I agree with Bitter Old Woman by the by when it comes to your son. I quite like him.

Peter G

Planned Parenthood does not perform abortions. They refer women in need of such to clinics.

Anne J

Their whataboutism is their way of showing they have no argument.

Peter G

This would come as news to me Max. For I have no trouble at all believing, in or out of the Bowel's of Christ, that I might be wrong. This is why we search for truth. Occasionally you find it.

The Dark Avenger

Duff and Merry Mary never have any self-doubts. They see it as a feature and not a bug.

Max

;)

Peter G

In fairness you are entitled to believe that Duff does not really mean what he says. And I detect in your resentment of academics a grain of truth. I spend quite a lot of time knocking the hell out of poorly supported studies and worse still scientific journalism which usually gets it wrong. But when I do this I go armed with facts and not opinions. Quite a few people in academia make me wonder how they ever got their jobs. And you may also have noticed that many graduates of august Universities don't actually have the brains god gave a gnat. Do you know what Trump studied at Wharton? Economics! Which he doesn't understand at all.

I have often said that if you were an employer and were going to hire someone from an Ivy League college you would be well advised to make sure they were at school on a full academic scholarship. The places are infested with legacies who doesn't deserve their positions.

So here's where you and I and Obama might agree. My own country and the province where I live did something very right once. They massively expanded and funded higher education (including community colleges) in the sixties seventies to give everybody a shot. A conservative government did that. It is not hard to find in the previous generation people who should be running the place but never got a fair crack at the formal education needed to get those positions. Notice I did not say earn it. The world is full people whose diplomas don't prove anything more than their family had money.

Tony

Arguments? 'We don't need no steenking arguments. We have power, we have guns, and we take what we want.'

Aristotle said that man is the "rational animal". He should have said "rationalistic". Because, much of the time, the mind is simply used as a way to justify what one's guts have already decided.

That in particular is how Duff "uses" his mind. What a terrible waste of grey matter.

Max

Legacy admissions to top American universities are largely a thing of the past - and this has been true for decades, Peter.

Just ask the Bush family. Dubya was the only of his siblings to benefit as such, and then that was that. Since Wharton is a business school I'm not sure what you would have expected Fat Nixon (who clearly did not make it on his merits) to have studied. Do not take this clown and generalize; that's policy by anecdote.

Moreover, a growing number of top universities will not only accept but will cover the costs of tuition for families with lower incomes. If they want you, if you accept, you are in, with costs covered.

Poorly constructed studies are endemic; I don't believe half the studies in my field that I read. And I know you appreciate: read the fine print.

Peter G

I don't quite see that DA. What I see is a yearning for civility and tolerance, where many of us do not. The division bells are ringing if you'll pardon a reference to Parliament. What you choose to tolerate defines you. One of my favorite quotes from Abraham Lincoln is this, from a speech he gave on Southern Secessionists and what they wanted:

"This, and only this: cease to call slavery wrong and join them in calling it right."

In essence this is what the Trumpers and Duffs of this world want. To be tolerated and respected for holdings beliefs that should be neither tolerated nor respected. Which isn't to say we cannot debate what should or should not be done as a matter of policy. That isn't always clear.

The Dark Avenger

As somebody who went to “The Harvard Of the Midwest” on an academic scholarship, thanks for the compliment, Peter G.

Peter G

Yea, but Donald Trump junior went to Wharton too. Sock puppets are smarter that that guy. Very large percentages of attendees at Ivy League schools go where their parents went and the school endowments are dependent on large financial contributions. Given the concentration of wealth and its persistence I have a little difficulty in believing that wealth isn't a factor. The endowments are brimming so there is less of it than before but not none.

Still the educational opportunities that wealth provides begin at birth and that can put you on top of the curve. That is true. But that doesn't mean they were superior people just because they had superior advantages. I don't believe wealth is a sign of genetic superiority and I'll bet you don't either.

Have you ever noticed how often such people question the impressive academic achievements of someone like Barack Obama? Someone who didn't have the advantages wealth offers? It can never be his talent or his hard work. It never seems to dawn on certain people that the gates they want to use to block the way of minorities will apply to them too.

By the by, check out what's happening at New York City's premier public schools like Stuyvesant. It is fascinating.

Max

"Have you ever noticed . . .," um...

1. Professionally, this is part of my job.

2. Personally, I just went though this with my youngest, now a Junior in New York City.

3. I've been going through this with my peers
I'll stop here. Try to get out of policy by anecdote.for years, and it continues

4. Take a look at admissions grids, x axis GPA, y axis SAT/ACT. Take a look at the top ones. Naviance is the best modern source. For your high school, not only do you get the "applied / wait listed / accepted" for each cel - you also get that for students who graduated from your high school.

More than any other documentation, it puts the lie to the notion that legacy admissions are that big. They are not.

4 a. These admissions grids look very, very similar to the late-70s, 40 years ago.

4 b. As but a small example, with the median SAT at MIT at 750, and 770 at Cal Tech . . .

5. Attend a graduation from a prestigious law or medical school some time. It's a United Nations.

Yes, I live in the state, I follow NYC events in education (since I am in, you know, education), I have a kid there.

With all due respect, your knowledge is deeply flawed.

Bitter Old Woman

Irony Max, irony. Peter G is a clever guy who is occasionally wrong just like everybody else.

L. Reeves

When you're carrying said "baby" in your own male belly, you can have an opinion, David. In the meantime, I'd be interested in what you feel about already existing humans and how they are treated (not treated), and specifically those recently at our borders. Can you justify this treatment of families in any way?

And I've always heard it said that British humor and American humor differs. But most humans would agree that joking about a specific person or persons having a serious accident and dying, is just not funny. Really. Ever.

Bitter Old Woman

At the best of times I'm inclined to go off at a tangent, so I'll apologise for yesterday's ramble. I was very merry indeed! Dosed up to the eyeballs on opiates, washed down with a couple of glasses of wine (very unwise, I know). I dislocated and broke my foot in several places last Thursday. Now full of metal pins and a plate after a three hour op. I'm quite a keen tennis player and there'll be no more of that so I was drowning my sorrows.

It's an interesting concept..what makes an intellectual? To me, it's someone who is intelligent, expert in more than one field, tending towards knowing something about almost everything due to extensive reading and a thirst for knowledge that carries on throughout life. I don't think I'm flattering you to say that you probably fit the bill. Opportunity is key to achieving your full potential. I had every opportunity handed to mean a plate. I acknowledge that and I know also that I'm just averagely clever but I attended top schools and received a very privileged education. In my case, I'll admit that my university degree was a result of my family having enough money. All my four kids have done well academically. They were schooled in the state system in Australia, and then in the UK for their high school years. Not all state schools are equal. Cambridge schools are staffed by high calibre academics and their children attend those same schools. Children in those schools have a powerful advantage. My middle son is very clever and just cruised through school. He has a first class honours degree in Maths and Economics from the LSE. My middle son studied medicine at Oxford. My other two children, of whom I'm equally proud, attended red-brick universities. The selection process for Oxford, in particular, is rigorous. My son had to sit an entrance exam which was a fiendishly difficult intelligence test lasting hours. If you jump that hurdle you get invited to stay at the university for a weekend. The interviews are brutal, designed to knock your confidence. One young boy who was a school friend of my son was told that everything was over twenty minutes into his first interview. Thanks, but no thanks we've heard enough. Go home. There are no gnat brains there, but the place is swimming with entitled rich boys and patronising smart arses. My son took his girlfriend for a look around last year. As he said, sitting in a pub listening to the chatter of students, bursting with pride and astonished by their own brain power: "Nothing's changed here. Same old crap".

Hopefully, you don't think I'm telling you this stuff just to boast. I have a serious point. I don't think any of my offspring are intellectuals. Their fields of expertise are too limited, but I did notice a giant history book in my son's flat last time I visited. (He never showed any particular interest in History). He's a work in progress, I think. Maybe one day he'll give you and PM a run for your money.

BOW

My youngest, not my middle, son went to Oxford.

BOW

L Reeves, British humour and American humor are completely at odds with each other. Heck, one of us can't even spell the word.

BOW

Calm down, Tom. PG called Sarah S., Sandra. Possibly deliberately. Our man the DA calls our host Paul, and continues to do so even after correction.

The Dark Avenger

Never was corrected, M^2. I’ll just call him “The Guy” in the future, if you don’t mind.

The Dark Avenger

?

Max

"When you're carrying said "baby" in your own male belly, you can have an opinion, David."

Yes.

Max

I love 'em both. An many Americans prefer British humour over American humor.

Max

Our host ended his post with:

"This particular, ahem, writer has accused liberals and leftists and center-leftists of being out of civil bounds. Yet that sort of hateful, inhuman, "witty" drivel is what he treats his ideological readers to. Any guess as to who he is?"

And anyone who suggests said writer is not being hateful is also full of shit. People know when they are being hated on.
