I just read Kazan on Directing. My favorite line — actually, just a passage from the line — of its 289 pages?
"It is not essential that you should want to fuck the leading lady."
It's that kind of commonsense, give-it-to-us-straight advice that I admire in a semi-autobiographical work on professional judgment — Kazan himself, I gathered, often surpassed the "want" — although I'm not sure it would have worked with me directing Ann-Margret. Some things are eternal, immutable, and simply not up for debate.
