There is a popular misconception about single payer. That would be the idea that it implies equal coverage for everyone. It does not. And when you understand that it does not and why it does not then you begin to see why M4A is a dead duck. It will not be the Republicans who beat it into the ground. It will be Democratic party factions whose interests it does not serve.

All the fucking hate that Buttigieg is getting from the fucking woke left (a fucking misnomer if there ever was one—those folks slumber on in dreamland) just makes me fucking love him even more.

The fucking woke left are just as ignorant and pig headed as any fucking right winger.

I caught a bit of an interview a couple of days ago. As I sit here I can't remember the show, but whoever was interviewing was spending some time with him on the campaign trail and chatting with him as he rode in his campaign vehicle and there was something about Mayor Pete that made me think of Obama.

He didn't have Obama's charisma, because Obama just has something special. He's once in a lifetime. But what he had was that Obama-like calmness, a steadiness that reminded of when I first saw Obama and turned to my husband and said "I'd give that guy my last dollar. He's not only smart, he's an authentically good guy. I believe this." Buttigieg has that same quality. Something that says he's above the crazy and the self involved of both left and right, but he still understands something of what makes them that way and he'd like do something about it and for them if they'd just calm down. A grownup.

Does that make any sense?

If F-bombs are the way to go then prepare for a fucking air raid! Instead of fucking hating on Mayor Pete due to his fucking lack of fealty to fucking Medicare For All, how about democrats quit fucking fighting about it and unite around the fucking fact that Trump and the fucking republican party want to take everyone's fucking health care away. It shouldn't be that fucking hard to unite and scare people about the fucking fact of what a profanity and abomination the Trump presidency is! And fuck the fucking woke left!

Amen. Well said.

They really are. Growing up in a fundamentalist evangelical environment, I find the woke left to be just as judgmental, self-righteous, close-minded, and ultimately emotionally damaging. One reason I left academia is it started to feel too much like religion. If you’re not perfectly in line with their theology, they will do what they can to ruin you. No thank you. I’m learning more and more that what you believe isn’t as important as how you believe it. How did you arrive at your beliefs? How much do they define you? How do you regard and treat others who differ from you in their beliefs? How flexible are you in your beliefs? Are you able to maintain an epistemologically humble, self-critical stance?

Absolutely. He possesses that combination of genuine self-confidence and equanimity that is all but extinct in politics. Strange to hear him attacked from the far left for being a phony when I find him easily to be among the most authentic of the candidates. I guess having a nuanced perspective that affirms the validity of competing positions is too much for people who distrust complexity and cling to simple explanations.

You’re right. The analogy I’ve been using is that MFA is like taking away everyone’s car and giving everyone a Honda Civic. After all, shopping for cars, applying for loans, and paying for repairs is such a burden—and public transportation is a joke in most of the U.S.

But yes, MFA is actually worse than that.

He deserves much better than he is getting from those quarters.

It's not really like that though. As soon as you hit 65 you sign up for Medicare, but Medicare is not providing your care. The next step is to sign up for a Medicare Advantage plan. These plans differ quite a bit. Although all of them must offer a base level of coverage, some can cost a bit more and look like "Cadillac Coverage."

Medicare for All would be about the same, I assume. Pay a little more, get better service than the "Honda Civic Plan."

I don't get the MFA thing. I've been on Medicare for a few years now and if I didn't have my Plan F supplement I would still have a boatload of out of pocket expenses. Would these candidates like to explain to me how this works without private insurance providers?

Fucking A

Fair or not, it comes with the territory. The fact that he is evidently being attacked is a sure sign that he is gaining traction. And how about the amazing Elizabeth Warren vanishing act?!

I think Buttigeig would be an amazing VP choice for Biden. If Buttigieg needs experience, then in four years under Joe, he will have it. But I guess, the conventional wisdom is that Biden would need a female VP for gender balance. I'm not convinced of that: is anybody?

This is the best fucking comments section ever.

That would be a great ticket. I would proudly wear that t-shirt.

And as for the need for a female VP - speaking as a woman, and just my 2 cents worth - I don't like the idea of choosing a candidate just because she's a female. I'm sure that there are other women who would disagree, but I don't want a good man passed over just to make some historic point.

"The Honda Civic Plan" lol

I would love a Biden/Buttigieg ticket, but the woke left would throw a raging fit over the lack of pansexual representation or something.

Right, everyone gets the basic trim level, but amenities cost extra. The government ain’t giving you no moon roof: Now, if you can’t afford a car or you’re still nursing along that ‘89 Ford Tempo, a plain ol’ Honda Civic may sound wonderful. But for all the Audi and BMW owners, not to mention those in love with their gas guzzling pickups and SUVs, even a fully loaded Civic is gonna steer them to revolt.

It’s not really worth the effort to try to understand it, because it’s not a real plan. It’s just a bumper sticker.

You are correct. That's why I haven't bothered to go to Bernie or Liz's sites for details. The whole thing is a non starter in congress. They could at least mention tiered MC coverage or that taxes replace private premiums. How many words does that take?

Damn good point.

It's so strange. Warren made her reputation as an uber wonk. And she somehow locked herself into a position that requires one of Paul Ryan's magic asterisks. Might as well be Ryan. I was about to say that I thought she was smarter than that but sometime back there was a discussion here about that and I forget who - Tony? Peter? Jason? - said that her reputation, if you dug deep into her record, didn't actually support that. Again, Ryanesque. Sad.

Like you say she could mention those. But I think she's kind of tied herself in a knot with dreams of being President. I wonder if she knows it.
