Every time I hear about someone staying put during a natural disaster because "God will save me", I am reminded of the old joke beloved of pastors which goes something like this:
It had been stormy, and the river was predicted to rise. A man who lived next to the river ignored the evacuation request because he felt that god would save him. The river rose; the road to his house went under water. A high clearance truck run by the National Guard drove to his house and told him they would take him to safety. He refused, saying "God will provide". The river rose higher, now lapping at his porch. A police search and rescue team came by in a boat telling him they could take him to safety. He refused, saying "God will provide". The river rose higher, now filling the first floor of his house so he had to go onto the roof. A helicopter run by the Air National Guard flew by and told him they could lift him to safety. He refused, saying "God will provide". The river rose higher, washing away his house and he drowned. When he reached the pearly gates, he asked St. Peter why did God let him drown? St Peter replied, "God sent you a truck, a boat and a helicopter. What more did you want from him?
