Look at this manly Arizonan with his AR-15 and 100-round magazine. Just what did he think he might accomplish with all that firepower? Was he merely attempting to appear as the supreme idiot he is? Or at the "Stop the Steal" Phoenix protest, did he contemplate taking hostages and gunning one down every hour until his state certified for loser Trump? Stop the steal. Right.
Yet he is only a symptom of the GOP's unAmerican wacko machine, as directed by our manifestly psychotic president. Yesterday, Arizona's secretary of state "issued a statement lamenting the 'consistent and systematic undermining of trust' in the elections and called on Republican officials to stop 'perpetuating misinformation,'" reports the Times. The AR-15 gentleman is but one such consumer of Trump and allies' madness.
Georgia's secretary of state has complained of being muscled by the powerful chairman of the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, the Cruzlike-slithering Lindsey Graham, "to search for ways to disqualify votes." I repeat: Graham is chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, which sits in service of unearthing justice. Or at least that was once the scuttlebutt.
"In Pennsylvania, Republican state lawmakers advanced a proposal on Wednesday to audit the state’s election results that cited 'a litany of inconsistencies.'" Imaginary all, excepting a few handfuls of common clerical errors. In Wisconsin, Republicans "filed new lawsuits on Wednesday in the state’s two biggest counties, seeking a recount."
But the prize for unrefined Trumpian psychosis — perhaps tying with Lindsey — goes to Wayne County, Michigan Republicans on the canvassing board. First they rejected certifying Detroit's overwhelming Biden vote; "after public backlash, the two board members reversed their votes and agreed to certify"; and then, late yesterday, they announced they "were rescinding their votes to certify," claiming that earlier they had been "bullied" by the two Democratic board members into doing the sane thing. But game over, says the board's vice chair. The certification is binding.
Via the Washington Post's Max Boot: "According to Axios, only six Republican senators (out of 53), seven Republican governors (out of 26) and 10 Republican members of the House (out of 197) have thus far acknowledged that Joe Biden won. That means fewer than 1 in 10 of the most senior elected Republicans publicly stands behind our electoral system."
Make America great again? Only once before, in the sectional crisis, has this nation sunk so low. Meanwhile, as hundreds of thousands of Americans die from the covid pandemic and joblessness and small-business failures grow, Republicans sit and do nothing. I have never been so embarrassed by my country.
